Day 13 Out in the Sticks on Route 66

We had a leisurely exit from the Hualapai Lodge after a light breakfast. Strangely, the deer head hanging over the fireplace last night (see yesterdays post) fell down last night while Amy was in the room working on the Lodge computer. She swears she had nothing to do with it. The town of Peach Springs is in extreme poverty, and the Lodge serves as the center of the community. The tribe survives on tourism with their Lodge, Skywalk, river rafting and a few other ventures. It was interesting and humbling to see how these people live, trying to maintain their heritage. We finished our transit of Route 66, passing lots of interesting land forms and taking goofy pictures, and got to Kingman AZ, where there are historic buildings dating from the wild west days, plenty of kitsch surrounding the heyday of Route 66 in the 40s and 50s, religious advice, and lots of places named Route 66. We found an authentic Santa Fe railroad car, engine, and caboose across from the Visitor Center. We got back on the very dull road towards Las Vegas, and had lunch at the Last Stop Burger Bar and Grill, Machine Gun Shooting Range and Uranus Gas station ("Eat here and get gas in Uranus"). We took more silly pictures and Sam got bit by a rubber snake. We drove back over the Hoover Dam, and took time to walk over the new bridge and snap the classic Hoover dam pictures from above (and a few more silly pictures). Finally back in Nevada, we quickly made our way to Sam's Town where we went bowling, modeled fashionable footwear, and watched the hotel's flashy light and water show. Amy won $5 in the casino! Now it's off to bed so we can rise at 6am and get on planes and buses again. News of our day aloft tomorrow. Please reply
