Day 2 Let the Wet Times Roll

We left our not-so-Quality accommodations in Dothan and got on the road at 8:30. The time change has been interesting. Sarah and Sam are having trouble understanding why the clocks were set back at the Alabama border (please keep your snide comments to yourselves). They realize their bodies are telling them it is one time while the clock says another. We've tried to minimize the effect by eating later and staying up later. The drive through Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi was very wet but uneventful. The rain was so heavy at times that everyone put on their flashers for safety. We kept watching for signs of clearer skies, but as soon as the rain let up, it would begin again. We finally got to the Louisiana border. Then as we made our way into New Orleans, the rain finally let up for good. The GPS got us efficiently to our hotel. The Prytania Park hotel is an historic property in the Garden District of NOLA. It has iron railings, narrow passageways, balconies, and best of all, the guest rooms have lofts where the second beds are located. Samuel and Sarah were excited to find they would have their own loft to sleep in! Samuel had fun clowning around on the railing and the spiral staircase. After exploring our funky hotel, we got ready to head to dinner, and got directions for the streetcar to go downtown. We waited patiently for a few minutes, and then we had a happy accident when we got on the car going the wrong direction, and endeed up getting to see the whole Garden District, including some beautiful homes and churches, before realizing we had gone the wrong way. The streetcar operator (whose name was NOT Desire) was not terribly happy about issuing us transfers to head back in and where we wanted to go ("You are SUPPOSED to realize you are on the wrong car BEFORE the end of the line!"), but with a little persuasion she did. So we got a tour of an area we wouldn't normally have seen for free. Finally we arrived in the middle of downtown, on the corner of Canal Street (which is really Main Street) and Bourbon Street. We found a great place to eat where the kids enjoyed some Po Boys and we sampled some delicious gumbo, red beans and rice, and jumbalaya On the way back to the streetcar, we found a giftshop where the kids tried on some necklaces with really big balls, and I did NOT buy a shirt with an inappropriate message on it. Now we are back in the fabulous Prytania Park Hotel, and resting up for a full day of touring this interesting and historic city tomorrow. Please leave a message or reply by email, so I know someone has seen this. Goodnight!
